How to have a truly happy new year.

For the first time in years, I don’t remember my New Year’s resolution from January. Usually, I write it down in my journal or on a note I stick to my mirror. There’s been many of those dog-eared sticky notes from years past. The year of contentment. Speaking life. We passed pancakes across the breakfast table on January 1st this year. “What do you want from 2018?” I can’t remember my answer. I know what I didn’t want though. I didn’t want to walk into her office and share the parts of my life I’m inclined to hide. I didn’t want to Facetime her the day after she delivered her baby that never breathed. I didn’t want to spend four months wondering how I’d walk into her house on Christmas day and see her empty chair. I didn’t want to go on another first date that led nowhere. We sit across from each other in a little coffee shop in Colorado, picking at a charcuterie board. “When I think about all of the things I have left to go through,” her voice cracks....

Memorizing the Roman's Road

I shake sleep from my eyes and flip through Romans, scratching down a narrow road to stick to my bathroom mirror. I'm starting to understand that it's not enough to just know what I believe. It's not even enough to have a logical/intelligent reason behind my faith. I find myself, daily, hearing error and I need a solid rock on which to stand. The tenets of my life shouldn't be my goals etched on the first page of every journal or hung up on my bedroom wall. Rather, the building blocks of my life should be His very Words. They should be embedded in my heart, so I have something to grasp when the ground is shaken.

Romans 3:23
"for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,"

Romans 6:23
"For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."

Romans 5:8
"but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us."

Romans 10:9-10
"because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved."

Romans 10:13
"For 'everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.'"
